TRC extends deadline to file complaints

KATHMANDU, June 16: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has extended by 30 days the deadline to file complaints against perpetrators of serious human rights violations during the decade-long Maoist armed insurgency.

According to TRC member, Madhavi Bhatta, the victims of human rights violations can file complaints against their perpetrators till the Nepali month of Shrawan 1, 2073 BS (July 16, 2016).

Bhatta says, the deadline has been extended in view of the growing number of complaints against perpetrators of serious human rights violations during the armed insurgency.

Officials of the TRC and the Commission on Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) are encouraged by the high number of complaints being registered at the two transitional justice mechanisms.

CIEDP had received 1,778 complaints  by June 6 while TRC has already received 17,631 complaints. The number of complaints received by CIEDP exceeds the government record of only 1,495 cases of disappearances during the decade-long Maoist insurgency.
