KATHMANDU, May 8: Minister for Information and Communications, Sherdhan Rai has said the minimum wage of the journalists - Rs 19,500- fixed by the government would come into effect from coming July 16.

After arriving home participating in the World Summit of Information Society organized by the International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, on Saturday, Minister Rai, however said at Tribhuvan International Airport that he has taken positively the comments made by the media owners on the minimum wage fixed by the government, and further discussion would be held soon.


Efforts are underway to recognize media as the industry, he said, adding that the WSIS was very fruitful, where he shared the information about Nepal's telecommunications and future plans.

The Minister further said he informed the WSIS that Nepal was expanding the telecommunications to the farthest rural area, making 3Gs accessible.

Some 49 districts have already got optical fibers, he said, adding that it would be spread to all districts within a year.

On a different note, he said there was no point in the comments raised over celebration of the National Journalism Day on the anniversary of the Gorkhapatra daily. RSS
