Statues dating back thousands of years stolen

BHAKTAPUR, May 11: Two statues of goddess Brahmayani dating back thousands of years have disappeared from Brahmayani Temple at Taulachhe in Bhaktapur Municipality in Bhaktapur.

Superintendent of Police at Metropolitan Police Range, Bhaktapur Kiran Bajracharya said that investigation show that last night the main gate of the temple and two other padlocks were seen broken by thieves.

One of the stolen metal statues is fitted with four hands, weighs around five kilograms and stands 1.1 feet tall. While the other is 10 inches high with four hands and weighs around five kilograms.

It has been revealed that the statues were found stolen when people visited the temple for the regular morning rituals. Four priests are employed at the temple.

Police reached the incident site immediately after local people informed them right after they came to know about the missing statues at around 7 today morning.

Police said it became easier for the thieves to lift the statues at the temple as local people living around the temple migrated to elsewhere, following the April 25 earthquake.

Bajracharya said that they conducted raids at suspicious places in connection with the incident and are launching a search for the statues. RSS
